Link building training is a strategy technique for building a link profile for your website. Building a link strategy is the process of obtaining citations from other websites. The more your page is linked, the more your web page becomes popular. Link popularity plays a major part in optimizing your web pages. It’s one of the crucial factors that Google uses to rank your website.
However, it’s not just the number of cited links that matter, it’s also the quality of the sites that link to your pages. Websites that link you should have high authority and be relatable to your site. Otherwise, a link from a low-quality or unrelated site can actually harm your ranking and reputation.
But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Follow our guide in link building training to generate high-quality links and gain link popularity.
Maintaining a healthy profile when building links
There are many link building techniques you can use to maintain a healthy profile. Links should be earned and originate from authoritative and relatable pages. But where do you start from? How can you find trusted sources and what can you do to get featured?
We give you a list of the most common strategies used. The first strategy works on building your internal link structure, while the rest help you generate external links:
Publish a blog
This form of content and link building strategy is widely used and is actually recommended by the engineers at Google. By writing blogs, you essentially generate fresh content, engage users across the web and gain listings and links from other blogs.
Be careful to not allow any low-quality guest posting just for the sake of link building. Google disapproves of this behaviour and should be avoided at all costs.
Be personal and give value
People hate receiving automated robotic type messages. If you want to promote your work and be cited, you cannot expect to be featured if you are not personal and trustworthy. You need to take the time to create customized and personalised initial outreach emails. The aim at the end of the day is to get a response. So our tips are:
- Personalise your message by mentioning something the person is involved in, working on or interested in.
- Give value – Inform them about a broken link on their website or a page that is rendered incorrectly from a mobile device.
- Keep it short and concise.
- Ask a simple question – best not ask directly for a link but rather work on building a good rapport first.
Create a digital representation of your brand
One of the best ways to earn the traction of the press, bloggers and other news media is by building a great digital representation for your brand. To do this, you need to sometimes offer something for free to be reviewed, or release a great new product that’s worth talking about. Sometimes, things that help, although ironic is to state something controversial to get the conversation going. Make yourself newsworthy!
Build great content
At the end of the day, you can have a great linking strategy but without valuable high-quality content, it won’t do you any good. Your content needs to be valuable and offer something unique. If you are lacking in this area, maybe it’s best you return to your pages ranking for that term you are targeting. There’s always a lot of potential for improvement.
Black vs white vs grey hat SEO – how it affects your link building effort
Black and grey hat tactics although may provide quick and easy solutions for link building will cause severe penalties in the long run.
White hat SEO is the process of abiding by Google’s Webmaster guidelines and take the right approach to achieve top-ranking positions. The right approach focuses on optimizing for their readers and is the long-term approach to appear consistently in search engines.
Meanwhile, black hat SEO uses tactics that infringe the guidelines by using manipulation to gain quick rankings. The grey hat is similar to the black hat but uses tactics that are less risky and obvious to Google’s terms. You need to understand that Google has a special webspam team that focuses on websites that use black hat tactics to not rank. So, it’s always best to be patient and apply the proper SEO tactics. It may take more effort but in the long run, it will be the best way to achieve consistent success.
Link Velocity in SEO – how fast to build links
You need to be ahead of your competitors. It’s not enough to build a good link structure, you need to actively keep building new links for your most worthy content. It is critical to define and maintain an appropriate link building velocity.
To do this you need to keep in mind 2 metrics:
- Links/Time – The number of links needed to get first page rankings at a point in time.
- New links rate – The rate at which you need to obtain new links to retain your ranking.
For the first metric, you can use Ahrefs SERP Overview report.
Step-by-step Guide on How to find monthly Link velocity target using Ahrefs.
By finding your monthly Link velocity target, you can determine: how many backlinks you need for first page rankings and how many new links you need to acquire to stay in the competition.
- Enter your target keyword in the Ahrefs Keyword Explorer. In our case, we entered ‘accounting crash courses’
2. Scroll down until you see the SERP Overview:
As you can see although WallStreetPrep has fewer number of referring domains pointing to it, its Ahrefs Ranking (AR) is much higher. This is because even though CorporateFinanceInstitute has more referring domains than WallStreetPrep, they are not necessarily as high quality. Therefore, it’s better to have fewer referring domains with high quality than have a high number of links with less quality.
3. So let’s take a look at more details in WallStreetPrep. Scroll up and locate the SERP Position History. Click on the dropdown arrow next to the competing page. Select the Overview link:
4. Here you will be presented with an overview report for that particular URL. Next, click on the New link in the Referring domains header:
5. You will then be presented with the number of links won and lost over specific time frames (make sure to press ‘one link per domain’)
6. Next, scroll down to the end of the report to see how many new links were acquired over the last 7 days:
In this case, we see that in the past 7 days, 4 new links were acquired. All of these 4 links were relevant (hence why it had a high AR). You can also choose a higher range, for example, 30 or 60 days. This will give you a better idea of how many links on average the website gains. In this case, in 30 days, StreetWallPrep received 7 new backlinks and in 60 days, received 14 new backlinks. That means that the number of backlinks generated is quite consistent per month.
Review from results:
We have analyzed the data for the competitor StreetWallPrerp ranking for keywords ‘accounting crash courses’ in this link building training. Therefore, to compete we would need at least 15-20 quality links to the page in the first 60 days. We would also need to acquire new links at a rate of 7 a month to stay in the lead.
